Slowly Making Progress With The 301

After I got the 301 unstuck I hoped things would start looking up for the old thing. But I put the throat plate on and...it wouldn't turn again. This time it was the projection that comes up from the bobbin race that fits into a notch under the throat plate. It's not supposed to move while the rest of the bobbin section does. It's stuck.

I found a diagram at Yahoo Vintage Singers Group and took off part of the bobbin race, cleaned it, and put it back. Also a drop of oil. Ahh, now it's working.

Up until now I haven't plugged the 301 in--there was no point since it was stuck. It's time. I give it a try and it's working!--and sounds nice and quiet. But does it sew? Sure the tension is broken, but I have to know if it will form a stitch. I threaded it up and stuck some fabric under the foot. I pushed the tension spring to push the discs together and held them with my left hand. I know, not very technical. But look:

Stitches! And those are the from the underneath side --the top was even better. I expected loops. The feed dog teeth left an imprint in the fabric--no problem. I just turn the screw on top of the presser bar to loosen the pressure and that's fixed.

Next I'll have to tackle fixing the dreaded tension knob.

I am happy to hear good news about the 301. I have a 301, (from the local goodwill of course), and I love the straight stitch. I have been curious about your progress since your first post on it!! Mine is the tan, wish it were black though. I don't own a black machine. I also have the green/white featherweight (Goodwill-$4.50!!!), and two new Janomes. I am sure I could find room for the perfect black vintage machine though!!

Thanks for all the great teaching. I really look forward to looking at your blog every day.
